Hovering on the team reveals the team insignia, home stadium, website and major domestic titles won.

Note: The San Jose Earthquakes franchise relocated to Houston at the end of the 2005 season and renamed themselves Houston Dynamo. This is considered to be a new team, so the San Jose Earthquakes trophies are not included in Houston Dynamo's history.

Note: For two seasons (2000 & 2001) there were three divisions, the Western, Eastern and Central Divisions. The Central Division consisted of Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn & Tampa Bay Mutiny. Chicago Fire won this league both times.

An explaination of how it all works

1. The teams are split into two divisions, the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference.

2. The two conference leaders records are then compared at the end of the season and the one with the most points wins the MLS Supporters' Shield.

3. The top side in each conference at the end of the regular season are conference champions.

4. The top sides in their respective conferences then compete on a play-off basis for the MLS Cup.

5. The winners of the MLS Supporters' Shield & the MLS Cup are then put forward for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, an international Champions League type competition involving US, Mexican, Central American and Caribbean teams.

NASL (North American Soccer League) history

There was a soccer league in action before the formation of the current MLS setup, known as the North American Soccer League. Prior to this the National Professional Soccer League & the United Soccer Association were in place.

The NPSL & USA leagues were set up in 1967, but only lasted one season. They then merged to form the NASL in 1968, which lasted for 17 seasons, involving at it's peak 24 teams.
