Notes on naming conventions
I've tried to be consistent with the names of teams on this page, but in some cases I've referred to them by their English rather than their native name. All the differences are listed below to help with any confusion or arguments that arise from this page.
- 1961: Feijenoord are, as you probably guessed, Feyenoord. They changed the spelling of their name in 1971 as the ij in Dutch is pronounced as y internationally. Their stadium is still called Stadion Feijenoord, although most people refer to it as De Kuip, which translates as The Tub in English. If you've been there you'll know why. I've kept the reference as Feijenoord for the sake of accuracy.
- 1962: Prague is the English translation for Praha. So strictly speaking it should be Dukla Praha along with Bohemians ČKD Praha (1984) and Slavia Praha (2006).
- 1967: Hajduk Split are commonly referred to as HNK Hajduk or just Hajduk in Croatia.
- 1967: The full French name for Olympique Lyon is Olympique Lyonnais.
- 1971: Rapid Bucuresti & Dinamo Bucuresti (2006) refers to Bucharest.
- 1972: AC Milan are generally known as Milan in Europe, in the same way as Inter Milan are generally referred to as Internazionale.
- 1972: For non English people Wolves refers to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
- 1972: FK Crvena Zvezda are more well known in English speaking countries as Red Star Belgrade.
- 1973: Vitória FC are also sometimes known as Vitória de Setúbal.
- 1973: Grasshopper Club Zürich are more often referred to as GC or Grasshopper in Switzerland.
- 1974: 1.FC Köln in English would be Cologne FC.
- 1982: Bayern München is the German for Bayern Munich rather obviously.
- 1999: FC Zimbru are sometimes referred to as FC Zimbru Chişinău.
- 2007: This was an obvious one. הפועל תל-אביב or Hapoel Tel Aviv? I felt the latter was just a bit more understandable to a non Hebrew audience. I hope you agree!
