1971 - 1972 UEFA Cup

New competition, same old story. Season 1971/72 might have seen the launch of the UEFA Cup, formerly the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but it brought no change in the balance of power. If anything, the fine-tuning done by European football's governing body seemed to strengthen the hand of English clubs. English final Entry was now limited to the highest-placed teams that had not qualified for the European Champion Clubs' Cup or UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, while teams from the same country were barred from meeting until the quarter-finals. There was nothing to stop them meeting in the final, though, as happened with the face-off between Tottenham FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. Wolves hungry Both had a European tradition to uphold. Spurs had lifted Britain's first European trophy in 1963; Wolves had blazed an earlier trail with their floodlit friendlies against Kispest Honvéd FC and FC Spartak Moskva in the 1950s. Indeed, the Molineux side rolled back the years with a series of impressive displays against Clube Académica de Coimbra, ADO Den Haag, FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Juventus FC and Ferencvárosi TC, the pick being the 3-2 aggregate defeat of Juventus. Spurs prevail But despite this, and the presence of tournament top scorer Derek Dougan, they came unstuck against Spurs. Martin Chivers' late strike gave the Londoners a 2-1 away success in the first leg, which they consolidated with a 1-1 draw back at White Hart Lane. Spurs, who had emerged unbeaten from ties with Keflavík, FC Nantes Atlantique, FC Rapid Bucuresti, FC UTA Arad and Milan AC, now had a UEFA Cup to add to their UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

1972 - 1973 UEFA Cup

It was 1973 before Liverpool FC joined the European roll of honour with victory over VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the UEFA Cup final. Even then, however, they needed an action replay to project their domestic dominance on to the continental scene. Wins against Eintracht Frankfurt, AEK Athens, Dynamo Berlin, 1. FC Dynamo Dresden and Tottenham FC, on away goals in the semi-finals, had carried Bill Shankly's men through. Mönchengladbach dominance. The campaign had also hardened them for battle against German sides, of whom Mönchengladbach, along with FC Bayern München, were the exemplar. 1. FC Köln and 1. FC Kaiserslautern would say ja to that, having given way to Hennes Weisweiler's team in successive rounds. FC Twente then subsided 5-1 on aggregate in the last four. Not so Liverpool. Keegan double. Not after manager Shankly had added John Toshack to his line-up for the replayed final first leg at Anfield after a waterlogged pitch had forced an abandonment. When the action resumed the next day, the Welshman's height caused havoc in the Mönchengladbach defence, allowing Kevin Keegan to score twice and Larry Lloyd once in a 3-0 triumph. It was a knockout blow, although, to their credit, VfL revived to win the return 2-0 with goals from Jupp Heynckes.

1973 - 1974 UEFA Cup

Europe's original Dutch masters, Feyenoord were back brightening the football landscape in 1973/74. As well as winning their domestic title, Wim van Hanegem and company also challenged for the UEFA Cup. And then some. Östers IF, Gwardia Warszawa, R. Standard de Ličge, KS Ruch Chorzów and VfB Stuttgart were all caught in the 'Feye' slipstream en route to their final showdown with Tottenham FC. Early shocks The London side were bidding to reclaim the trophy they had lifted two years earlier and so extend the English monopoly into a seventh year. It was an ambition the likes of Grasshopper-Club, Aberdeen FC, FC Dinamo Tbilisi, 1. FC Köln and VfB Leipzig had failed to dent in a competition where the top Latin sides were early fallers. The biggest bump was sustained by tournament debutants Real Madrid CF - beaten by Ipswich Town FC in the first round - while FC Barcelona and Internazionale FC were other casualties. Thrilling final So it was left to the northern Europeans to provide the drama, and this they did in spades in the final first leg at White Hart Lane. Twice Spurs had the lead, through Mike England and a Joop Van Daele own goal; twice Feyenoord replied, through the totemic Van Hanegem and Theo de Jong. Suitably buoyed, the Rotterdammers then finished the job at De Kuip, with goals at the end of either half from Wim Rijsbergen and Peter Ressel. But while Feyenoord took home a second European trophy (to add to the European Champion Clubs' Cup won in 1970), Spurs collected a European ban for the crowd trouble caused by their supporters.

1983 - 1984 UEFA Cup

Season The dreaded lottery of penalties decided the outcome of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup competition - with Tottenham FC holding the winning ticket in the first final shoot-out. Tony Roberts's save from Arnor Gudjohnsen secured Spurs's victory over RSC Anderlecht after the tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate. The Belgian side had looked set to retain the trophy when Alex Czerniatynski scored an hour into the second leg at White Hart Lane. But a late Graham Roberts equaliser in a 1-1 draw, added to the goalkeeping heroics of his namesake, ensured otherwise. Tottenham double up The London side's second UEFA Cup success was reward for an impressive campaign in which they had accounted for Drogheda United FC, Feyenoord, FC Bayern München, FK Austria Wien and HNK Hajduk Split, on away goals in the semi-final. Yet their opponents had also excelled. Bryne FK, FC Baník Ostrava, RC Lens and FC Spartak Moskva could testify to that. Anderlecht ban Anderlecht's efforts would, however, be overshadowed then totally eclipsed by the rumours of foul play surrounding their semi-final win over Nottingham Forest FC. The English team conceded a dubious penalty and had a goal disallowed as they crashed 3-0 in Brussels to lose out 3-2 on aggregate. Forest's goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen said: "We were cheated and it was the Spanish referee who kept us out of the final. He was Anderlecht's 12th man." Anderlecht would later be found guilty for their part in the bribery scandal, and banned for a year from European competition.

UEFA Cup

Initially known as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup the first two competitions were played over 3 years, when trade fairs were in European cities. From the 1960/61 season it was staged annually.

In the 1966/67 season the name was changed to the European Fairs Cup and in 1971/72 it changed to it's present name, the UEFA Cup.

The image

The map and the insignia on hover is one image. The insignia are below the visible area of the image and are referenced in the css file.

The css

I found the image rollover map while browsing Tanfa, our map is a version of the CSS Image Rollover Map ~ Europe.

I added opacity on the flags in development, because practically speaking, it helped to see through the flags when I was adjusting the css positioning.

The css is specific to this map only. If you want to check it out, the css file is here. It includes the image rollover, opacity and fading tooltip styling.

There is a more detailed description of how this works at the rollover map page.

The javascript

I added the Sweet Titles fading tooltips from Dustin Diaz, with a few tweaks to stop the tooltips appearing everywhere on the page.

Dustin Diaz has a great site for javascript, css and web standards. To quote his words 'Web Standards with Imagination'.
