Ukrainian League & Cup during the USSR years

There was a Ukrainian league played as a cup tournament prior to the USSR Championship system in 1936. It was played from 1921-1935 between Ukrainian cities. There was also a cup tournament for clubs won by Dynamo Kyiv in 1936.

From 1936-1991 there was a Ukrainian league championship, but it tended not to include the major clubs as they competed in the USSR Championship.

There was also a Ukrainian cup competition played from 1937-1991. Although initially some major teams competed (Dynamo Kyiv won it 6 times in the first 11 years), they again tended to enter the more competitive USSR Cup.

I haven't included the winners here, but follow the links through to the RSSSF Archive if you want more detail.

Russian winners (marked in green text) details can be accessed by following the link to the Russian league & cup page.

Notes

  •  1: The first USSR Championship in 1936 was played as two leagues. One in the spring won by Dynamo Moscow and another in the autumn won by Spartak Moscow.
  •  2: CSKA Moscow were known as CDKA Moscow from 1928-1950 and CDSA Moscow from 1951-1956.
  •  3: Shakhtar Donetsk were known as Shakhtyor Stalino from 1947-1961 and Shakhtyor Donetsk from 1962-1992.
  •  4: Dynamo Tbilisi are a team from Georgia (marked in green text).
  •  5: Ararat Yerevan are a team from Armenia (marked in green text).
  •  6: The USSR Championship in 1976 was again played as spring & autumn leagues. The spring league was won by Dynamo Moscow and the autumn league by Torpedo Moscow.
  •  7: Dynamo Minsk are a team from Belarus (marked in green text).

Research

I've cross referenced as much as possible and added links to the new club website where possible. Many thanks goes to the RSSSF Archive, which was an invaluable source of information whenever an insolvable fact was needed. If you need to find a football answer, it will be on there somewhere.
