Firefox v IE
Having recently added StatCounter to the site, I have just reviewed the first months statistics for June 2006. The browser stats were very encouraging. Our stats were :
IE 70.4%, Firefox 25.6%, Safari 2.3%, Opera 1.4% and Mozilla 0.3%
I was amazed to be honest. I’ve seen stats like that for developers sites, but you’d maybe expect their visitors to be using non IE browsers. Maybe people are actually waking up to the fact that there are better browsers out there. At last!
I’ve always developed for Firefox, checked in Opera and Netscape, used snugtech’s free (at present) service for Safari and then bitten the bullet and looked at the page in IE, fully expecting to have to add an IE fix. And I’m usually not disappointed!
Some more reliable stats for browser usage can be found at thecounter.com where Firefox has been gaining 1% a month since the start of the year. Their June total was IE 82% and Firefox 10%. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to that trend when IE7 eventually limps out.
